Microsoft Store will not open in Windows 11 or 10

Diagnose a Store window that closes, stays blank, or cannot load by separating launch, network, cache, and account-specific failures.

Quick diagnosis

First distinguish a Store application that never opens from one that opens but cannot load its catalogue. A third case, one app refusing to install, needs its own error and requirements checked. Keeping those cases separate avoids resetting Windows for a connection or app-specific issue.

Symptoms

  • Microsoft Store briefly appears and closes
  • The Store window remains blank or shows a loading error
  • The installed Store app cannot be launched from Start

Likely causes

  • Stale Store cache or damaged local app state
  • Incorrect clock, network filtering, or a service-side problem
  • Account-specific state or organization restrictions

Quick reversible checks

  1. Record the error code and whether the Store window opens at all.
  2. Save work and restart Windows once, then launch Microsoft Store from Start.
  3. Check the date, time zone, and region are correct rather than changing them to bypass availability restrictions.

Check the scope before resetting the app

If the catalogue opens but only one download fails, record that product and its error rather than treating the entire Store as broken. Check the product’s device and account requirements.

If other Windows applications also close immediately, note those failures. A broader problem needs more evidence than repeatedly clearing the Store cache. On a managed PC, a deliberately unavailable Store should be discussed with IT.

Compare the connection path

When the Store launches but content will not load, test ordinary websites. If those fail too, diagnose networking first. If browsing works, that only proves those sites are reachable, not that all Store services are reachable.

On a personal device, compare an approved alternate network if available. Keep any VPN or proxy changes temporary and recorded. Do not disable security protection or bypass organization policy to make this comparison.

Reset the Store cache once

Press Windows + R, enter wsreset.exe, and select OK. A blank command window can appear before the Store opens. This is the Store cache reset, not a Windows reinstall.

After it finishes, reproduce the original launch or loading failure. If the same error returns, record it and move on; repeated cache resets provide no new diagnostic information. If the window never completes, preserve that observation instead of launching more copies.

wsreset.exe

Use Repair before Reset where available

Find Microsoft Store in the app settings and open Advanced options if offered. Windows 10 uses Apps > Apps & features; Windows 11 may list it under Installed apps or System components depending on the release. Choose Repair first and test again.

If Repair fails and Reset is available, read its confirmation before proceeding. Reset can remove the app’s local state and require sign-in again. Confirm that you know the account credentials and can complete verification before accepting.

Compare account scope and pending updates

Complete a pending Windows restart at a safe time. If another existing authorized account can launch the Store, retain that comparison; it suggests user-specific state rather than proving the whole Windows installation needs repair.

If several built-in components fail across accounts, review the linked DISM and SFC guidance only after collecting errors and protecting work. Those tools address Windows component and protected-file integrity, not every Store account, licensing, or service problem.

Verification

  • Launch the Store from a closed state and open more than one product page.
  • Repeat the original failed action with the intended account; a visible window alone is insufficient.
  • Restore any temporary network configuration and confirm the result persists after a normal restart.

When to stop

Stop for managed restrictions, account-verification failures, or recurring errors after one cache reset and an appropriate app repair. Record Windows version, account scope, error code, and network comparison for support. Do not reinstall Windows solely because the Store cannot reach a service.

Review the safe troubleshooting workflow before any broader recovery step.
