Windows Update installation failed

Establish the scope

Read Update history to distinguish a completed download with installation failure from a download that never finished. Record the KB, error code, and whether this is a feature or quality update. A repeated error at the same stage is more useful than clearing the history or repeatedly retrying without a change.

Apply the safer fix first

Restart, connect power, free storage, and retry once. Use the troubleshooter and preserve the exact error rather than clearing evidence.

Investigate the cause

Use DISM then SFC for broader corruption. For feature updates, check vendor support and never bypass a safeguard hold.

Protect the recovery path

Back up accessible files before servicing repairs. Disconnect accessories only when they are idle and safely removable, or after a normal shutdown.

Verification

• Check that Update history reports the intended KB installed successfully after any requested restart.
• Confirm the PC starts normally and that another check for updates does not immediately repeat the same failure.

When to stop

Do not continue with broader resets when Windows rolls back every attempt, storage has errors, or a hold applies. Preserve the observations already collected and use the device maker, network administrator, Microsoft support, a qualified repair technician, or data-recovery help according to the evidence.
