Windows screen resolution is incorrect

Establish the scope

Use Identify in Display settings to select the affected screen. Distinguish a missing resolution mode from text that is merely too large because of scaling. Compare Extend with Duplicate before changing drivers, because a shared display mode can restrict the available resolution.

Apply the safer fix first

Select the numbered monitor in Display settings. Duplicate mode can limit both panels, so test Extend.

Investigate the cause

Use a cable and port rated for the desired mode, then install the OEM or GPU-maker driver. Avoid custom timings.

Protect the recovery path

Record the working mode and use only supported choices. If a display-setting test goes blank, allow its confirmation timeout to revert rather than accepting an unreadable mode.

Verification

• Confirm the intended resolution remains selected on the correct monitor and the image is not stretched.
• Check text size separately through scaling and repeat the original dock or multi-monitor arrangement.

When to stop

Do not continue with broader resets when the panel does not support the mode or visual artifacts appear. Preserve the observations already collected and use the device maker, network administrator, Microsoft support, a qualified repair technician, or data-recovery help according to the evidence.
