Establish the scope

Observe whether Task Manager flickers with the rest of the desktop or only one application redraws badly. Compare another application and, where practical, a direct monitor connection. The comparison guides the next test; it does not by itself identify a failed graphics card.

Apply the safer fix first

If Task Manager also flickers, suspect driver or hardware; if stable, focus on the affected app. Choose a supported refresh rate.

Investigate the cause

Update or roll back the graphics driver according to timing. Test one monitor with a direct cable and known-good input.

Protect the recovery path

Keep a readable display before driver changes and avoid custom refresh settings. Stop testing for painful flashing, overheating, or physical display damage.

Verification

• Use the same application and supported refresh setting that previously flickered.
• Repeat with the original monitor connection and confirm both desktop and application output remain stable.

When to stop

Do not continue with broader resets when artifacts appear before Windows, the panel fails another source, or heat is excessive. Preserve the observations already collected and use the device maker, network administrator, Microsoft support, a qualified repair technician, or data-recovery help according to the evidence.
