Windows laptop plugged in but not charging

Distinguish an intentional charge limit from an unsuitable charger, dock power shortfall, battery fault, or damaged charging connection.

Quick diagnosis

Being connected to a cable does not prove the laptop is receiving enough power to charge. First record whether Windows detects external power, whether the percentage is stable or falling, and whether a manufacturer charge limit is active. Those observations separate expected battery care from a power-path fault.

Symptoms

  • Windows detects power but the battery percentage does not increase
  • The battery drains while connected through a dock
  • Charging stops below full or the power indicator changes when the cable moves

Likely causes

  • An intentional smart-charging or manufacturer charge threshold
  • An incompatible or insufficient charger, cable, port, or dock
  • A temperature, connector, battery, or charging-circuit problem

Quick reversible checks

  1. Save work and note the battery status, percentage, and whether the computer is under heavy load.
  2. Inspect the charger and connector without opening them; stop for damage or unusual heat.
  3. Check the PC maker’s battery utility for a documented charge limit before assuming a fault.

Identify a stable limit versus actual discharge

A percentage that remains near a configured charge threshold can be expected battery-care behavior. Inspect the manufacturer’s utility or documentation for that model. Do not assume every machine should remain at 100 percent while plugged in.

A percentage that keeps falling during ordinary use is a different symptom. Record whether that happens only under load, only through a dock, or even while the machine is idle with the intended charger.

Check the complete power path

Use the charger and cable specified for the laptop and connect to its charging-capable port. A USB-C plug fitting the socket does not establish suitable charging capability. Compare the required charger specification with the labels and the PC maker’s guidance.

Bypass the dock or hub for a direct charging test with the correct equipment. If direct charging works, focus on dock power delivery, its supply, and the connecting cable before changing Windows drivers. Do not test arbitrary barrel-plug adapters just because they fit.

Compare charging with the workload removed

After saving work, close demanding applications normally and observe charging at idle. If appropriate, shut down normally and allow charging with the specified supply, then start again and compare the percentage.

Charging while shut down but discharging under load can indicate a power shortfall; it is not proof that the battery needs replacement. Failure to charge even while off moves attention away from running applications, but still needs a hardware-specific assessment.

Use the manufacturer’s status before software resets

If the maker provides battery or adapter diagnostics, read the reported adapter identity, battery status, and any error code. Record the result rather than interpreting one estimated capacity figure as a definitive pass or fail.

Avoid uninstalling battery devices, resetting firmware settings, or updating firmware as a blind first response. Firmware work requires stable power and model-specific instructions. If Windows alone misreports the state while the maker’s indicators disagree, preserve both observations for support.

Recognize physical stop conditions

A bulging case, lifted trackpad, smell, sparking, or an unusually hot connector is not a Windows setting problem. Stop using and charging the device and follow the manufacturer’s safety and service instructions.

For an undamaged machine, note whether gentle normal connection changes affect detection. Do not keep bending a cable or forcing a loose socket to obtain a charging indicator; that can worsen the fault.

Verification

  • Confirm Windows consistently detects the intended power supply without moving the cable.
  • Below any configured charge limit, compare the battery percentage before and after a reasonable charging interval with ordinary workload.
  • If the dock was involved, test direct and docked operation separately and keep the working configuration documented.

When to stop

Seek manufacturer service for swelling, damaged ports, overheating, adapter errors, or persistent noncharging with the correct supply. An intentional charge limit is not a defect to bypass; an unstable power connection is not a reason to reset Windows.
