Quick diagnosis
Separate keyboard connection, accessibility, layout, driver, and hardware faults. The key distinction is whether “No keys respond” occurs by itself or together with “keys repeat or differ.” That difference helps separate battery or connection from filter keys or layout.
Symptoms
- No keys respond
- Keys repeat or differ
Likely causes
- Battery or connection
- Filter Keys or layout
- Physical damage
Quick reversible checks
- Try another port or battery
- Use On-Screen Keyboard
Establish the scope
Confirm when no keys respond and whether keys repeat or differ. Note the exact time and the last relevant change, then compare the closest known-good device, account, connection, or application using the same task.
Apply the safer fix first
Reconnect the receiver or Bluetooth pairing. Review Filter Keys and the active language layout in Settings.
- Record the current state related to try another port or battery.
- Apply the narrow change, then check whether no keys respond.
- Continue only if the result still points toward filter keys or layout.
Investigate the cause
Test in firmware or recovery: failure there indicates hardware. Reinstall the device only when alternate input is available.
Protect the recovery path
Before work that could affect drivers & devices, protect relevant files and sign-in or recovery credentials. Keep the original error wording and the results involving battery or connection, filter keys or layout, physical damage for support.
Verification
- Repeat the affected task under the same conditions used to confirm no keys respond. Confirm the symptom is gone, not merely that a Windows status label changed.
- Repeat the relevant connection, startup, sign-in, sleep, application, or device transition and specifically check whether keys repeat or differ.
When to stop
Do not continue with broader resets when liquid damage occurred, keys fail outside Windows, or no alternate sign-in exists. Preserve the observations already collected and use the device maker, network administrator, Microsoft support, a qualified repair technician, or data-recovery help according to the evidence.
Review the safe troubleshooting workflow before any broader recovery step.
