Quick reversible checks
- Restart Windows Explorer
- If a removable drive appears to be causing the stall, do not eject or disconnect it during copying, moving, saving, backups, or any other active access. Once activity has finished, use Windows Safely Remove Hardware / Eject. If it cannot be safely ejected, close applications using it and retry. If safe removal still fails, shut down Windows normally and wait until the PC is fully off before disconnecting the drive.
Establish the scope
Compare a simple local folder with the specific folder, network location, or right-click action that hangs. If only a remote or removable location stalls, investigate that connection before system-file repair. If many local folders hang, note whether the taskbar or Start also fails and whether the drive reports errors.
Apply the safer fix first
Test a simple local folder, clear Explorer history, and open This PC instead of Home if recent remote locations stall.
Investigate the cause
Use a clean boot to isolate shell software, check storage health, and run SFC if other Windows shell components fail.
Protect the recovery path
Keep file transfers and saved work protected before restarting Explorer. Preserve the exact failing path and read errors; do not format a drive or reset permissions to troubleshoot a hang.
Verification
- Open the previously failing location and repeat the same navigation or right-click action after the targeted change.
- Check a known local folder as a control and confirm needed files remain readable without new disk errors.
When to stop
Do not continue with broader resets when a drive disconnects, reports errors, or holds irreplaceable data. Preserve the observations already collected and use the device maker, network administrator, Microsoft support, a qualified repair technician, or data-recovery help according to the evidence.
