Audio crackling or distorted in Windows 11 or 10

Isolate distorted playback by comparing local audio, output devices, enhancements, formats, and workload before changing drivers.

Quick diagnosis

Crackling is a different problem from silence: Windows is sending audio, but the signal or playback path is unreliable. Use the same short recording for each comparison. Establish whether distortion follows the recording, one output device, one application, or the PC under load before applying a repair.

Symptoms

  • Pops or crackles interrupt otherwise audible playback
  • Speech or music sounds distorted through one output
  • Playback breaks up during calls or demanding tasks

Likely causes

  • A damaged connection, speaker, or recording
  • Output enhancements or an unsuitable format
  • Application, driver, or workload-related interruptions

Quick reversible checks

  1. Lower listening volume before testing and try a known-good local recording.
  2. Compare another playback application using the same file.
  3. Check the selected output and compare another headset or speakers if available.

Separate streaming from playback

If a local file plays clearly but a stream breaks up, compare the same stream on another device and inspect network activity. Do not start with audio-driver removal when the only failing test depends on the internet.

If the defect occurs at the same point in the same file on different devices, the recording itself may be responsible. If unrelated local recordings distort only here, continue down the Windows output path.

Find whether the fault follows the output

For a wired headset, reseat the plug and check for cable damage. Test at a modest volume. For USB audio, try a direct port without the hub. A fault that moves with the accessory to another computer points toward that accessory.

For Bluetooth, compare a wired output and note whether quality changes only when a call activates the microphone. That is a useful distinction for the accessory’s supported call modes and application settings; it does not establish that the Windows system files are damaged.

Test enhancements and format separately

In Windows 11 Sound settings, select the affected output and turn Audio enhancements off if offered. In Windows 10, open the playback device’s properties and inspect the Enhancements tab. Driver-specific controls vary. Record the original setting, test the recording, and restore it if nothing improves.

Next inspect the device’s available format choices in its sound properties. Test one supported alternative, then replay the same recording. Do not change format and enhancements together: otherwise you cannot tell which made a difference.

Correlate glitches with the workload

Keep Task Manager visible while reproducing the problem. Note whether glitches occur only when a particular application is busy or when CPU, memory, or disk demand stays high. Close a nonessential application normally and repeat the recording.

Resource activity is a clue, not a diagnosis of a specific driver. Avoid registry latency tweaks, disabling arbitrary services, or increasing process priority as general audio fixes. If one player alone is affected, repair or update that application first.

Make a driver change only with a useful comparison

If the distortion began immediately after an audio-driver change, inspect the device’s driver details and use Roll Back Driver when available and appropriate. Otherwise obtain the supported driver from the PC or audio-device maker.

Save work before restarting and keep a record of the old driver version. If there is no improvement, stop stacking changes and retest the original output against the alternate one. A clean alternate output is valuable evidence for support.

Verification

  • Replay the same local sample at the same volume using the original application and output.
  • Repeat the workload or call that triggered the fault and check another recording.
  • Record which single setting or driver change helped; restore unrelated experimental settings.

When to stop

Seek hardware support if the accessory distorts on another device, connectors are damaged, or the PC also freezes or overheats. For persistent PC-only glitches, provide the output model, driver version, workload, and local-file comparison instead of claiming a particular driver is proven faulty.
